HikingOver 1600 miles of hiking trails–easy to difficult–in the Bitterroot National Forest. Enough to satisfy a variety of interests. Wildflower enthusiasts, camera buffs, and families will delight in the Bitterroot’s grandeur and mile-high clean air.

Swimming/Boating/RaftingComo Lake, Painted Rocks Lake State Park, and the Bitterroot River offer great areas for fast or slower paced water fun.

Fishing: Right here in Darby the Bitterroot River has some of the best trout fishing in the country on the East Fork Btterroot, West Fork Bitterroot, or main Bitterroot River. Fishermen have access to streams, rivers and mountain lakes as well.

Wildlife Viewing/Photographers: Bird watchers and hunters are attracted to the area by the variety and abundance of our wildlife species.

Ghost Town Tour: Take a scenic tour through some great Ghost towns that are just a few hours away. Bannack is close so just come on through the Big Hole Valley to the Bitterroot to get on the Lewis and Clark Trail.

Horseback Camping and Riding: Your trail to adventure starts in Darby. Horseback rides and summer pack trips can be found in abundance, through many outfitters, right here in Darby.

Lewis and Clark Trail: Darby is just north of Ross’ Hole in Sula and Lost Trail Pass right on the Lewis and Clark Trail. “Follow the route of the Corps of Discovery across Montana and take in the historical account of the historic journey as well as plan your own expedition to see and experience the same sites and sights that Lewis and Clark experienced more than 200 years ago.”  (visitmt.com)

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks: Here are all the State Park fishing access sites within 10 miles of Darby.

Big Hole National Battlefield: is a memorial to the people who fought and died there on August 9 and 10, 1877; combatants in a five month conflict that came to be called the Nez Perce War of 1877. 10 miles west of Wisdom, Montana and about 1 hour from Darby.

Glacier National Park: Located a scenic 4½ hours away by car.

Yellowstone National Park: Located a scenic 6 hours away by car.

Heritage and History

Darby Pioneer Memorial Museum – Historical items of the past. Darby’s Pioneer Memorial Museum (see image above) was originally one of the first hand-hewn homestead cabins built in the area. It was crafted by early settler Evelin Matteson in 1886 on his homestead near the mouth of Tin Cup Creek. It is located beside the Town Hall (Map Link)

DARBYRANGERUS Forest Service –  Darby Ranger Station Visitor Center and Museum – History and recreation come together at the historic Darby Ranger Stations Visitor’s Center and Museum. The building, built between 1937 and 1939 by the Civilian Conservation Corps, was the district ranger station until 1964.  After a new ranger station was built, the old one was used for storage.

  • Main Street Park – 106 S. Main Street (Hwy 93). Adjacent to Library, Town Hall & shops; playground equipment, gazebo
  • Tin Cup Park – 201 Tin Cup Road. Shallow cooking fire pits, pine trees (no facilities)
  • South Park – 201 Warren Lane. Swings, pic-nic tables, cottonwood and pine trees (no facilities)
  • River Park – 605 E Miles. Foot access to the Darby Trail of Discovery and the Bitterroot River (no facilities)
  • Waincrest Park – 105 S Mill Street. Gazebo, tables, play area with swings, horseshoe pit and fire pit. Restrooms available in summer.

Other Town and Community Facilities

Darby Skatepark – 301 Rodeo Road. Concrete skate pad with steps, ramps and rail. (no facilities)

Richard Cromwell Memorial Rodeo Grounds – 200 Rodeo Road. Rodeo Grounds facility for public events and riding. Contact Town Hall for use availability and/or see Calendar for scheduled events. Access to the Darby Trail of Discovery.

Darby Trail of Discovery – a non-motorized trail system that will eventually connect all Town parks, Darby School and recreational facilities. Trail is being constructed as funding is available. Access points at the Richard Cromwell Memorial Rodeo Grounds, Darby School and River Park.
